Need: To teach students how to make money during a recession, by learning to start a business using online resource.
Action: FLC-SIFE created a global eBay program. eBay provides small business the opportunity to go
global, eBay has a presence in 39 countries with 84 active users worldwide. FLC students are partnering with other students
who have eBay experience to form teams and start an eBay account. Teams are competing to see who can earn the most income. This is a virtual game; teams sell items based on research.
Results: 50 students participating in 14 teams.
Students register to sell on eBay, and learn how to make money. They will continue to use eBay in the future for income generation.
Partnerships: Los Rios Small Business Development Center and the Center for International Trade
Development.

Need: Orphans from Uganda produce jewelry to raise money for tuition, vocational training, food, medicine, and clothing. The beaded jewelry is made from recycled materials. Hope Bead Trading Company contacted FLC-SIFE to request our assistance in marketing and selling the hand crafted jewelry to businesses and consumers.
Action: FLC-SIFE students sold the jewelry on campus and marketed it through local businesses.
Results: Money from jewelry sold assisted 300
orphans and 40 widows. Small business assistance to 3 local entrepreneurs. FLC-SIFE members created a global project that aids orphaned children.
Partnerships: Hope Bead Trading Company and local businesses.

Need: To encourage students and community members to participate in our civic duty to vote.
Action: The FLC-SIFE team helped “Rock the Vote” by registering FLC students to vote. We hosted voter
registration tables on our campus and at a local mall.
Results: 109 voters registered, 5 FLC-SIFE members also registered to vote. Thanks to our combined efforts voter turnout for the 2008 election was the highest it’s been since 1968.

Need: To teach entrepreneurship and business skills to elementary school students, as requested by our Business Advisory Board member Michael Lee.
Action: FLC-SIFE will teach 4 kindergarten classes at Empire Oaks Elementary School.
Results: Expected outreach of 120 kindergarten
students on March 19. Anticipated 2 thumbs up rating!
Partnerships: Junior Achievement Sacramento and local elementary schools.

Need: With school districts facing budget cuts, our team realizing the importance of teacher training, We participated in the Educating for Careers Statewide Teachers Conference.
Action: Developed and presented 3 workshops
designed to “Teach the Teachers”; Personal Finance Credit Jeopardy, Entrepreneurship, and our
“Reality Check Diversity” Game.
Results: 70 teachers taught with an outreach to teach over 2,000 students state-wide. FLC-SIFE
received great feedback from the teachers.
Partnerships: California Career Pathways Consortia

Need: California’s unemployment level hit 10.1% the highest in 26 years in January 2009.
Action: In response to the rising unemployment, FLC-SIFE developed a project to teach community members how to compete in today’s job market. The competitive edge project has two components:
community workshops and individual counseling.
Results: 100 youth trained at Youth Event, 5
individuals received counseling, mentoring and job shadowed with local business owners. Semi-annual surveys will be administered to participants.
Partnerships: El Dorado Chamber of Commerce

Need: To train girls in business and personal success skills.
Action: For the sixth year in row FLC-SIFE participated in a very successful cookie college. This
training taught girls between the ages of 5 and 17 entrepreneurial skills and marketing skills.
Results: Over 500 girls scouts were trained at the event. This event was featured in a “Good Day
Sacramento” television broadcast.

Need: Downtown Placerville businesses asked for assistance in marketing of Downtown Placerville, FLC-SIFE went to work. These businesses were suffering due the economic downturn.
Action: “Shop Placerville” became our battle cry. Our team developed, collected, and quantified customer satisfaction data and presented this aggregate data to the Placerville Downtown Association. This
information will help them market downtown and encourage local shoppers to “Shop Placerville.”
Results: 19 local businesses in Downtown Placerville were evaluated, 25 small business owners came to the presentation and learned how to improve the marketing of their businesses. The merchants held a meaningful discussion about the importance of customer service in marketing your firm and persuading shoppers to “Shop Placerville.”

Need: FLC-SIFE was asked by our local Center for International Trade Development and Small Business Development Center to create a project to promote young entrepreneurs. We know entrepreneurship
contributes nearly 50% of the U.S. gross domestic product. This is a great project to help stimulate
economic growth and vitality.
Action: Our team developed a training module that was available online and a “Global Dream Business” contest.
Results: 179 FLC students participated in our Young Entrepreneurs Program. 164 students scored a 92% or higher on the post training survey. 133 students participated in the Global Business Plan contest aimed to educate students on how businesses operate in a global economy. “Italiano” won the Global Business Plan contest.
Partnerships: Greater Sacramento Small Business Development Center and Center for International Trade Development

Need: To assist low-income, seniors and disabled citizens with their income taxes.
Action: FLC-SIFE established the first Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site for the City of Folsom. Students and community members are currently able to get their taxes prepared by our
students at no cost. This service is also provided to seniors in partnership with a senior center and offered at an assisted living facility through a local hospital.
Results: 28 community members’ taxes have been prepared, 5 FLC-SIFE students are VITA certified. We have developed a new VITA site in the city of Folsom.
Partnerships: The Internal Revenue Service

Need: The average student will graduate with two credit cards and be over $4,000 in debt.
Action: This is our team’s second year participating in the AIG Credit Counseling Challenge. We are
currently educating students on our campus with a brochure and training materials developed by FLC-SIFE. We are teaching students in freshman orientation workshops and in several courses on campus. We also provided training materials to every instructor on our campus. Included is our innovative approach to teach students about credit. We created a student debt survey. We hope raising awareness of this problem will help students make better decisions.
Results: 700 students trained using FLC-SIFE
materials. FLC-SIFE continues to persuade students to stay out of debt.
Partnerships: AIG Financial

Need: To further develop student awareness to renew, recycle, reuse and responsibly use scarce
resources.
Action: FLC-SIFE working with our two local utility companies SMUD and PG&E, plan on
implementing an energy-wise program at Folsom Lake College during Earth Week. FLC-SIFE will hand
out energy-savings tips and practices and distribute energy-saving light bulbs and shade trees to our students. FLC-SIFE will assist students in completing our Drive-Wise hybrid analysis survey in
order to help them further determine the cost-benefit of purchasing a hybrid automobile.
Results: Estimated 225 students will participate in our Earth Week event. FLC-SIFE continues to persuade
students to be energy smart.

Need: To promote ethical and responsible downloading of music and video content from the Internet.
Action: FLC-SIFE created a training program to promote the ethical downloading of music and a 60 second public service announcement to promote the ethical downloading of video content. The RIAA training programs, has students learn the consequences of illegal music downloads including prosecution. The MPAA video compares the impact of downloading illegal videos to auto theft.
Results: Out of 153 participants, post training
surveys indicated that 73% would no longer illegally download digital content.

• FLC-SIFE hosted a Northern California training
workshop. Our team along with teams from Shasta and Butte colleges attended this training.
• Tahoe Retreat: To kick off the new SIFE year our team planned its first annual Tahoe retreat. This
retreat was a great success. We plan on making this an annual event.
• Our team is regularly involved in club events on campus and other venues to market the SIFE team.
• The FLC-SIFE team is excited to announce we are sponsoring a new SIFE team at Consumes River College, one of our sister colleges. We are mentoring the staff to continue our local legacy at that location. You can look forward to them joining us at regional competitions in the future.
• This year in its ongoing support of SIFE at Folsom Lake the Los Rios Community College District increased its annual financial support for the team.

• FLC SIFE team is developing an EBay training course for future SIFE teams to incorporate in their portfolio of training courses.
• Through our partnership with the Hope Bead Trading Company, the support of Ugandan orphans will increase in future years as we renew our boutique network and expand into local markets.
• This year our first Shopping Survey was prepared for a downtown merchants association. The initial results have provoked a change in how that city presents itself and they have requested we return next year to update our survey.
• Our ongoing success in developing and presenting Personal Success Skills has resulted in us being invited back each year to Girl Scout Cookie College, the Educating for Careers Teachers Conference and Junior Achievements’ Kindergarten Kapers.
• The Young Entrepreneurs Program is now built into an Introduction to Business Course as it helped influence students to incorporate an international component in business plans to a greater extent than in the past.
